Julian Steckel
Julian Steckel (born 1982) is a German cellist and academic professor. Julian’s solo career began after he won the prestigious ARD Musikwettbewerb award in 2010. Since then, he has soloed with orchestras such as the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchester de Paris, the Rotterdam Philharmonic and the St. Petersburg. He has worked with conductors such as Christoph Eschenbach, Sir Roger Norrington, Valery Gergiev, Jakub Hrůša, Mario Venzago, Fabien Gabel, John Storgårds, Lahav Shani, Antony Hermus, Christian Zacharias and Michael Sanderling. His collaborators in chamber music are Janine Jansen, Christian Tetzlaff, Karen Gomyo, Antje Weithaas, Renaud Capuçon, Veronika Eberle, Vilde Frang, Antoine Tamestit, Lars Vogt, Elisabeth Leonskaja, Paul Rivinius, Denis Kožuhin, the Modigliani, Armida and Ébène quartets.
Julian Steckel, cello
He studied with Ulrich Voss, Gustav Rivinius, Boris Pergamenschikow, Heinrich Schiff and Antje Weithaas. Now he is also a teacher at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich. From 2011 to 2017, Steckel was professor of cello at the University of Music and Theater in Rostock. Since October 2017, he has been working in the same position at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich. Last season, Julian Steckel performed with the Badische Staatskapelle with a performance of Shostakovich’s First Cello Concerto and Orchestra, the Dortmund Philharmonic, the Cottbus Philharmonic Orchestra performed Camille Saint-Saëns’ First Cello Concerto, with the Münster Symphony Orchestra and the Belgrade Philharmonic.
In the season 2022/2023 Julian Steckel performs with the Residentie Orchestra, the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra, the Heidelberg Philharmonic Orchestra, the Tokyo Philharmonic, the Málaga Philharmonic, the Amsterdam Sinfonietta, the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra and the German Radio Philharmonic, Suntory Hall Tokyo and Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw stand out among the halls. Concerts are planned with Sharon Kam and Enrico Pace, as well as Antje Weithaas, Tobias Feldmann, Karen Gomyo, Lise Berthaud, William Youn and the Modigliani Quartet.
In the 2023/2024 season guest as a soloist at the great jubilee of the Zagreb Soloists.
