The Fifth Symphony makes this heroic ideal unique, internal, but no less universal. Or, as Beethoven’s biographer says, “The Fifth Symphony symbolizes every man’s capacity for heroism under the blows of life, for the victory that is open to all of humanity, to each individual.”
