Hrvoje Philips started his musical education in Vinkovci and Osijek in the class of prof. Eva Hühn. He graduated in 2000 at the Academy of Music in Zagreb in the class of prof. Ante Živković, with whom he also received his master’s degree in 2009. He participated in numerous national and international seminars (Valter Dešpalj, Walter Küsner).
He is the winner of numerous awards and recognitions, among which stand out: 1st prize at the State Competition of Music Students in Split in 1994, 1st prize at the State Competition of Music Students – Non-Classical Chamber Ensembles in Zagreb in 1994 in a duet with his brother Davor.
He was also awarded the highest professional and state awards as a member of the Zagreb Quartet and Zagreb Soloists: the Vladimir Nazor Lifetime Achievement Award, the Porin discography award for the best classical music album, the Novi List Award for the best concert at the Rijeka Summer Evenings, the City of Zagreb Award, etc.
Together with his brother Davor, he is one of the founders of the Slavonsky string quartet, with whom he participated in the finals of the chamber music competition in Japan and Italy (The 3rd Osaka International Chamber Music Competition, Osaka 1999, competition finale, 15th Concorso Internazionale di Esecuzione Musicale, Caltanisetta 2000).
He gave concerts in Canada, America, China, Japan, Korea, South Africa, Russia, Hungary, Czech Republic, Poland, Italy, Austria, Germany, Turkey, Spain, France, Portugal and elsewhere.
From 1997 to 2000, he worked as a solo violist in the orchestra of the Croatian National Theater in Zagreb, and from 2004 he is employed as a section leader in the HRT Symphony Orchestra, with whom he also performs as a soloist. He has also been a permanent member of the Zagreb Soloists since 2000 and the Zagreb Quartet since 2005, with whom he recorded several recordings and played around 1,100 concerts.
